The Backbench Business Committee has now scheduled time on the 6th September 2012 for a debate on immigration to take place.
This debate follows a petition on the government e-Petition website, lodged by Migration Watch, which called on the government to take all necessary steps to get immigration down to a level that will stabilise our population as close to the current level as possible and, certainly, well below 70 million. The threshold for such a petition to be considered for a debate is 100,000 signatures. This was reached within a week.
As co-chairs of the Cross-Party Group on Balanced Migration we strongly support the aims of this petition and will lead the debate for the motion.
